🚛 Highway & Towing Safety
- Crossed Safety Chains
Always cross chains under the tongue. This creates a cradling net to catch the trailer tongue if the coupler fails. - The 10% – 15% Weight Rule
Your tongue weight must be 10% – 15% of your overall trailer weight to prevent dangerous highway trailer sway. - Breakaway Cable Security
Clip the emergency breakaway cable directly to the metal frame of your tow vehicle, never to the chain hooks or hitch receiver.
🏕️ Campground & Utility Safety
- The Closed Valve Rule
Keep waste valves closed until tanks are full, even on full sewer connections, to prevent solid waste buildup. - Water Pressure Protection
Always hook up a water pressure regulator at the campground spigot before attaching your hose to protect plumbing lines. - Absorption Fridge Leveling
Your RV fridge must be level to operate. Running it unlevel blocks chemical gravity flow and destroys the cooling coils.
Road Ready Terms to Know
• GTW (Gross Trailer Weight): The total weight of your fully loaded trailer, including cargo, water, and propane.
• Anode Rod: A sacrificial magnesium rod that rusts in place of your water heater’s interior steel tank.
• Wheel Chocks: Heavy rubber or plastic wedges placed against tires before unhitching to prevent trailer roll.
• Tongue Weight: The downward force weight exerted by the trailer coupler onto your hitch ball.
