🏕️ Part 3: Hooking Up Water, Sewer & Electric

Hooking up your utilities is much easier than most new owners expect. Once you’ve done it a few times, the whole process takes less than 10 minutes. The key is simply following the same routine every time.
Managing your hookups is all about a predictable routine. When you arrive, you’ll connect things in a specific sequence to protect your trailer and keep things simple.

⭐ The Road Ready Golden Rule

Protect your trailer before you connect it. Always attach your safety regulators and surge protectors to the campsite utilities first.
Water Connection Order:

Spigot → Pressure Regulator → Filter → Hose → Casita

Electricity Connection Order:

Pedestal → EMS/Surge Protector → Trailer Cord

Water (Fresh & Clean)

Campground water pressure fluctuates wildly and can easily exceed 80–100 PSI, which will quickly burst the internal plumbing lines hidden behind your Casita’s fiberglass panels. Let’s protect those lines first.
  • Step 1: Flush the Spigot – Before connecting your gear, turn on the campsite water spigot for about 5 seconds to clear out any stagnant water, rust, or sand sitting in the pipe. Turn it back off.
  • Step 2: Assemble the Protection – Screw your brass water pressure regulator directly onto the campground spigot. Next, screw your inline blue sediment filter onto the regulator.
  • Step 3: Connect the Hose – Attach your drinking-water-safe hose to the filter. Run water through it for just a second to clear out the air, then attach the other end to your Casita’s City Water Connection inlet.
  • Step 4: Turn on Slowly – Slowly turn the campsite water spigot on all the way. Walk back outside and check both hose connections for drips before putting your tools away. A tiny leak today becomes a muddy campsite tomorrow. Finally, walk inside your Casita, open your faucets briefly to bleed out any remaining air, and check under the sink and dinette for any unexpected leaks.

🏡 Road Ready Tip: Turn Off the Water When You Leave

Whenever you leave your Casita unattended for the day—whether you are going out to dinner, hiking, or exploring town—always walk over to the campground spigot and turn it completely off. If an internal plumbing line or fitting ever leaks while you are away, your water pump or the pressurized city water will continuously pump gallons of water directly into your trailer. Turning the spigot off takes two seconds and eliminates the risk of coming back to a flooded camper.

🏕️ Road Ready Tip: Keep Your Hose Clean

Never drag your fresh water hose through the dirt or mud, and never let the open, threaded ends sit on the ground. When you pack up, screw the two ends of the hose together to seal out bugs and dirt before storing it in its dedicated bin.

Electrical (Shore Power Protection)

Campground electrical pedestals are exposed to the elements and heavy wear. Open grounds, low voltage, or reverse polarity are incredibly common risks that can instantly fry your Casita’s appliances.
  • Step 1: Inspect the Receptacle – Look at the campground electrical box. Take five seconds to look inside the receptacle before plugging anything in. If you see burned plastic, corrosion, or loose contacts, don’t use it. Ask the office for another campsite or another pedestal.
  • Step 2: Check the Breaker – Ensure the main 30-amp breaker switch is flipped to the OFF position before you plug anything in.
  • Step 3: Plug in the EMS/Surge Protector – Plug your 30-amp surge protector or Electrical Management System (EMS) directly into the pedestal outlet.
  • Step 4: Verify the Power – Flip the pedestal breaker to the ON position. Look at the diagnostic lights or digital screen on your surge protector. If it shows an error code, flip the breaker off immediately and notify the campground office. Do not plug your trailer in.
  • Step 5: Connect the Trailer Cord – If the power is clean, flip the pedestal breaker back to OFF. Plug your heavy-duty Casita shore power cord into the surge protector, lock the twist-lock collar onto your trailer’s inlet receptacle, and then flip the pedestal breaker back to the ON position.

⚠️ Avoid Extension Cords

Your 30-amp shore power cord should plug directly into the pedestal whenever possible. If you absolutely must extend it because a pedestal is placed in a ridiculous location, do not use a standard household extension cord. Use only a properly rated, heavy-duty 30-amp RV extension cord to prevent voltage drops and overheating.

Sewer (Gravity is Your Friend)

Because Casitas sit lower to the ground than traditional travel trailers, your sewer connection requires careful attention to slope so gravity can do its job properly.
  • Step 1: Put on Gloves – Always pull on a fresh pair of disposable nitrile gloves before touching any sewer components. Keep a dedicated box in your outside storage bay.
  • Step 2: Lay the Support Path – Stretch out your accordion-style plastic sewer hose support (“sidewinder“) from your Casita’s waste outlet down to the campsite sewer hole. This creates a perfect, gradual downward slope.
  • Step 3: Secure the Campground Connection – Thread your translucent 4-in-1 sewer adapter firmly into the campground sewer pipe.
  • Step 4: Lock the Hose in Place – Extend your heavy-duty sewer hose. Twist and lock one end onto your Casita’s bayonet sewer valve outlet, and lock the other end onto the 4-in-1 adapter at the ground pipe. Ensure all bayonet fittings are clicked fully into place.
  • 🛑 Crucial Rule: Keep Your Valves CLOSED – Leave both your black tank and gray tank valves fully closed right now. We’ll explain exactly why in the next guide, but for now just remember: keep both valves closed while you’re camping.

Your Full Site Routine

Experienced RVers rely on a fixed sequence to ensure nothing gets missed. Memorize this flow, and you’ll never feel rushed or disorganized.
Arrival Sequence:
  1. Level Side-to-Side & Front-to-Back
  2. Chock the Wheels Securely
  3. Connect Electrical (Get the fridge cooling right away)
  4. Connect Fresh Water
  5. Connect Sewer
Departure Sequence:
  1. Sewer (Dump and flush your tanks first so you’re done with the dirty work)
  2. Water (Disconnect and drain your fresh water hoses)
    a. Turn Off the Water Heater (2 Places): Ensure your water heater is completely off so you don’t burn out the system. Switch off the electric toggle located outdoors behind the exterior hatch cover, and turn off the gas switch located indoors.
    b. Turn Off the Water Pump: Double-check that the indoor water pump switch is turned off so it doesn’t run dry on the road.
  3. Electrical (Leave power until almost the end because you’re probably still charging batteries, using lights, or running the fridge while packing inside)
  4. Hitch to Tow Vehicle
  5. Final Walkaround

⚠️ Common Utility Hookup Mistakes

  • Turning on the campsite water spigot without a pressure regulator attached.
  • Plugging your trailer cord into a live electrical pedestal while the breaker is still flipped to the “ON” position (this can cause electrical arcing and damage your plug prongs).
  • Leaving your black water valve open while camping, which drains the liquid away and leaves solids behind to form a hardened clog.

🏕️ Road Ready Tip

Always connect in the same order. Every. Single. Time. After two or three trips your routine becomes automatic, and that’s when mistakes disappear.
