Setting up a pet monitor in a Casita travel trailer requires a little creativity since we don’t have standard flat drywall or wide wooden shelves everywhere. Mounting the camera at the aft (rear) end of the trailer gives you the best wide-angle view of the entire living space and entry door.
Here is exactly how to mount, power, and configure your Wyze Cam v4 for your rig.
Step 1: Mount the Camera to the Rear Window
Because Casitas don’t come with a rear headboard, the best spot for an unobstructed view is the back window. The Wyze Cam v4 has a 120° wide field of view, so placing it here captures nearly the entire trailer.
- The Suction Cup Method: Since the trailer walls are carpeted hull-liner, you can’t use standard adhesive tape. Instead, use a dual-sided suction cup mount or a small suction-cup shelf affixed directly to the inside of the glass on the rear window.
- The Magnetic Option: The Wyze Cam v4 features a strong built-in magnetic base. If you have a metal window frame or a small metal bracket attached nearby, the camera will snap securely right onto it.
Step 2: Route the Power
You don’t need to worry about batteries dying while you’re away.
- Take the included outdoor-rated USB cable and plug it into the back of the camera.
- Route the cable neatly along the edge of the window or overhead cabinets toward the TV station area.
- Plug the cable into a 12V cigarette plug USB adapter, and insert that directly into the factory 12V cigarette outlet located right near the roof where the TV mounts.
Step 3: Run the Two-Phone Hotspot Configuration
To get the camera online while you are away from the rig, you will need a dedicated hotspot phone that stays in the trailer (Phone A) and your daily phone that goes with you (Phone B).
1.Configure the Hotspot: Phone A.
Turn on the Personal Hotspot on Phone A (the one staying in the RV). Crucial: Ensure the hotspot is set to the 2.4 GHz band. On iPhones, toggle on “Maximize Compatibility.” Wyze cameras cannot connect to 5 GHz networks.
2.Connect for Setup: Phone B.
On your daily phone (Phone B), turn on Wi-Fi and connect to Phone A’s hotspot network.
3.Pair the Camera: Wyze App.
Open the Wyze app on Phone B. Tap the + sign, select Add Device, and choose Wyze Cam v4. When prompted for a Wi-Fi network, enter Phone A’s hotspot name and password. Scan the resulting QR code with the camera lens.
4.Test the Remote Link: Verification.
Disconnect Phone B from the hotspot Wi-Fi and switch it back to regular cellular data. Open the Wyze app to confirm you can see the live feed of the trailer remotely.
💡 The Campsite Security “Flip” Trick
One of the coolest features of putting a 2.5K QHD camera on a window mount is its versatility. The Wyze Cam v4 features an industry-leading Starlight Sensor and a built-in 72-lumen spotlight, giving you full-color night vision even in total darkness.
When you leave the trailer: You have choices. Point the camera inward toward the cabin to keep tabs on your fur baby while you are away. Or, if your pet is joining you for the day and the trailer is empty, simply move the camera to your side window to monitor your campsite while you are gone. The camera has an expansive wide-angle view, so if you place it on the side glass, it can even pick up someone approaching your entry door while you’re away.
Because the camera has built-in AI-Powered Smart Alerts, you can set it to ignore swaying tree branches or passing campground traffic and only send a notification to your phone if it detects an actual person moving around your site.
📝 Quick Setup Reminders
- Add Local Storage: Pop a 32 GB microSD card into the base of the camera. If you travel through a cellular dead zone and the hotspot loses connection, the camera will keep recording continuously to the card without requiring an internet subscription.
- Watch the Night Vision: If you flip the camera to look outside through the glass at night, turn off the camera’s built-in spotlight and infrared (IR) lights in the Wyze app settings. Otherwise, the light will reflect off the glass window pane and blind the camera lens.
